The Relationship Corner: Feng Shui for Love and Partnership

Finding Your Relationship Area
Usually you have two bites at this cherry, let me explain.
Firstly, using the compass app on your phone, locate the Southwest area of your home. This is known as the Kun area, it's associated with the Earth element, receptivity, and the nurturing feminine energy that allows partnership to settle and deepen. Depending on your floor plan this area could be a kitchen, butler's pantry or part of your lounge. My love and marriage area is a laundry on the ground floor and a walk-in robe on the first floor. Not the most romantic rooms in the world but knowing which compass areas in your home relate to certain life themes allows you to manage them accordingly.
For me this means not letting the washing build up to unmanageable amounts, putting clothes away in a timely manner and regularly editing our robes to keep things fresh and exciting.
The second is more personal, your bedroom. When a client wants to strengthen an existing partnership, or is looking to call in a new love, I always pay closest attention to the master bedroom, because that's where the intimate energy of the occupants truly lives. It's also where you signal, energetically, that you're ready to share your life.
The Elements That Support Love
Because the relationship corner belongs to Earth, you want to honour and gently strengthen that element. Earth is steady, grounding, committed, everything a lasting bond needs.
- Earth tones and materials. Think warm terracotta, soft sandy beige, gentle pinks and peachy neutrals. Ceramics, pottery, natural stone and crystal (real quartz, rose quartz) all belong here.
- Fire feeds Earth. In the productive cycle, Fire creates Earth, so touches of red, deep coral, candlelight and soft lamplight nourish this corner beautifully. A pair of table lamps is one of my favourite relationship cures.
- Avoid too much Wood. Wood controls Earth in the destructive cycle, so a corner overrun with tall leafy plants can quietly undermine partnership energy. One healthy plant is fine; a jungle is not.
- Go easy on Water and Metal here. Large mirrors, water features and heavy metal decor can drain or scatter the Earth quality you're trying to build.
Everything in Pairs
This is the principle I return to again and again with couples. The relationship corner responds to symbols of togetherness, and the language of Feng Shui is beautifully literal.
- Two bedside tables, two lamps, two pillows. If one side of the bed is pushed against a wall, the message is that there's no room for a partner. Pull it out and give both sides space to breathe.
- A pair of matching objects like two candlesticks, two rose quartz hearts, two ceramic birds. Mandarin ducks are the classic Chinese symbol of devotion, but a pair of anything meaningful to you works.
- Artwork that shows connection: two figures, two trees, two flowers. I gently steer clients away from images of solitary people, empty landscapes or a single lone object in this space.
- If you display photos, choose ones of you and your partner together, happy and close, definitely not the kids, not the extended family, not you alone on a mountaintop.
Single objects, in the relationship corner, whisper singleness. It's a small shift with a surprising impact.
The Bedroom: Where Partnership Lives
You can do everything right in the Southwest of your home, but if the bedroom is working against you, the effort is undone. This is the heart of intimate connection, so it deserves real care.
- Position the bed in the command position so you are able to see the door, but not directly in line with it, with a solid wall behind the solid headboard. This gives both partners a sense of security, and security is the soil love grows in.
- Remove the work. Desks, exercise equipment, laundry piles and paperwork all carry the wrong energy into a room meant for rest and romance. In our smaller coastal apartments this takes discipline, but even a screen or a closed cupboard helps.
- Cover or reposition mirrors facing the bed. A mirror reflecting the couple is said to invite a third energy into the relationship, and practically speaking, movement in a mirror at night disturbs sleep, which does no favours for closeness.
- Soften the electronics. Phones, TVs and chargers flood the room with active, restless energy. Give them a curfew at the door.

Clearing the Way for Connection
Before you add a single cure, clear the clutter. Clutter is stuck chi, and stuck chi in the relationship corner shows up as stagnation, resentment or emotional distance. If your bedroom or Southwest has quietly become the household dumping ground for the box of things belonging to an ex, the pile of "we'll deal with it later" that's your first and most powerful cure.
Pay attention, too, to anything broken or unloved in this space. A dead pot plant, a cracked frame, a drawer that won't close, each is a small daily message of neglect. Repair it, replace it, or let it go.
And this is the part people forget: your outer world reflects your inner one. As you tend these areas with intention, notice what softens inside you too. Feng Shui works best when the space and the heart move together.
